The large deep cove of Agia Pelagia itself is surrounded by the smaller Ligaria Cove on the east and Mononaftis Bay on the west. The picturesque white buildings, the bluish-green of the Mediterranean and the varying shades from sandy brown to lush green along the shore, create a landscape of rare beauty. Agia Pelagia is an awe-inspiring example of the beauty of Cretan Nature and its almost impossible to resist taking a closer look. The main area of Agia Pelagia is built on the hills and slopes around the shore, creating an even more impressive sight when viewed from above. The Agia Pelagia bay is protected from the wave-creating north winds, and the sea is almost always serene.  On the weekends, many people from Heraklion find refuge on its sandy shores for a cooling dip in the azure waters. The region is full of natural beauty and due to its geographic position it played an important role throughout history. Where Agia Pelagia is now, there used to be an ancient Greek city, inhabited since around 2000 BC as most findings date back to 1700 BC and 1300 BC when the inhabitants had dealings with Faistos, Knossos and the Cyclades. The ancient town was destroyed by fire in 1200 BC. Sir Arthur Evans mentioned that they were the best salvaged remains of a Minoan harbour. Many of the ceramics collected there, are now found in the museum of Ashmolen in Oxford.
